Chapter 18: The Warning
I was at the bridge in twenty minutes with my hair still wet.
Nolan stood at the rail in his barn coat, looking down.
The Alder River was the color of chocolate milk, fast and thick, carrying a whole pine branch under the arches.
The gauge on the pier read four feet two.
"It came up eight inches overnight," Nolan said. "And it hasn't even rained yet."
"How long to grease and free that gate?"
"With a crane to take the weight off the racks and a crew to chip the ice? Two days. Maybe three."
"And without a crane?"
"Without a crane, you don't."
I looked upstream.
From the bridge you could see the top of the dam, a gray line against the hills, and the long white sheet of the falls.
Below it was Main Street. The diner. The post office. The elementary school with its red doors.
"Then we get her a crane," I said.
The plant gate was locked when we got there.
Delaney's white Range Rover sat in the lot.
I rang the buzzer six times.
On the seventh, she came out with a cup of something with whipped cream on it, wrapped in a cream blanket coat.
