Chapter 17: What She Took
He came to the duplex at eight that night, after Ellery's bath.
I let him in because the neighbors were watching from their porch.
Ellery was in her room, supposedly asleep, with the door open an inch.
I steered him into the kitchen and shut that door too.
"Say what you came to say," I said. "Keep your voice down."
He did.
"I'm going to repay you."
"You said that at the hall."
"You wouldn't hear it then." He stood with his hands flat on the back of a chair. "The forty thousand, the interest, the hospital, every month of her life you paid for alone. I can do the math. It comes to a number."
"Julius."
"It is a number, and I can write it."
"I know you can write it."
I turned on the stove burner under the kettle, because I needed something in my hands.
"You want to write a number so you can stop feeling the way you feel," I said.
He went very still.
"That isn't fair."
"It isn't. It's true, though." The flame hissed under the kettle. "I took your family's money. I told myself it was for Ellery. I let that be the story, because it was easier than the real one."
