Chapter 23: The Question
At seven o'clock sharp the kitchen table had a tablecloth on it.
I had not put it there.
Ellery stood at the head of the table in her velvet showcase dress, with her braids redone and a candle in a jar in front of her.
On the wall behind her, taped to the cupboard, was a sheet of poster board covered in crayon.
THE PLAN, it said, in capitals.
Julius and I stood in the doorway in our coats, with snow melting on our shoulders.
"Sit," Ellery said.
We sat.
She pointed at the poster with her bow, which she was using as a pointer.
"Step one. Mail the letter."
"Done," I said.
"Step two. Dad comes to dinner."
"Done," said Julius.
"Step three. Mom and Dad find out about the bad man. Step four. Mom and Dad are not mad at each other. Step five. Mom gets her chair back."
Each step had a gold star next to it.
Some of the stars were a little crooked.
"Step six," said Ellery, "the bad man goes away."
"That happened today," I said.
