Chapter 7: What He Believed

Dean's POV

I stood in the lobby until Carrie's crutches had clicked all the way across the marble and out the revolving door.

Faye did not look back. Carrie did not either.

Forty people had watched my wife serve me with legal papers, and every one of them was now very interested in their coffee.

"Dean."

Brynn touched my arm.

"Come on. Not here."

She steered me into a small conference room off the lobby and closed the door.

I sat down. The envelope was still in my hand, and I realized I had been crushing it.

"I can't believe she did that," Brynn said. "In front of everyone. That's cruel."

"She's not cruel."

"I didn't mean that. I meant, she's hurting."

"Brynn."

I put the envelope on the table.

"Sunday night, nine-twelve. A call from Poudre Valley Hospital shows as answered. Almost a minute long. I was asleep on the couch in the war room. Did you pick up my phone?"

She did not answer right away.

Her eyes went to the window.

"Sunday," she said. "God. I think... I might have. Sunday was a blur."

"Did you pick up?"

"Somebody called. It was some automated thing. Insurance, a survey, I don't know. I said hello and nobody was there, and I hung up. I'm sorry. I didn't think. I would never have hung up on a hospital."

"It was a person," I said. "The detective said it was a person. A police liaison."

"Then I didn't hear properly." She laced her fingers together. "Dean, I'm so sorry. I was exhausted too. You'd been up forty hours and I told you to sleep and I took your phone so you could, and I answered it, and I guess something got garbled, and..."
