Chapter 17: Give It Back
The naming hall hadn't changed since my birthday.
The same chandeliers hung over the same long floor, and the same three hundred guests stood in the same silk and black ties with their glasses in their hands.
Only the flowers were gone.
I walked in at eight with Corrado on my left and Ines on my right, and the sound of three hundred conversations stopped one table at a time.
The white-haired elder stood by the stage with his cane.
He lifted a hand to me, a very small gesture, and I knew that I had one man in the room.
My father was on the stage already, at the microphone, in a dark suit.
He didn't look at me.
"Friends," he said.
"I've asked you here to speak plainly about my family's misfortune."
"A young woman I raised has been led astray by a man with a grudge."
"She has forged a dead man's trust, and she means to take the Quay from the Cardinale house on a lie."
A murmur ran down the room.
He raised a hand.
"I will defend my house before the council," he said.
