Chapter 19: Soap
I did not cry in the hall, or in the car, or on the porch steps.
I cried in my own bathroom with the door shut and a brother on either side of me, and I couldn't stop.
"It's done," Vince said, rubbing my back. "Angel, it's done. You did it."
"I know."
"Then why is it worse?"
"Because I'm not holding it up anymore," I said, and he laughed, wet and low, and kissed my hair.
Tommy turned on the shower.
The old pipes knocked, and the steam came up, and the little tiled room filled with it.
He unzipped the green dress down my back, slowly, and laid it over the hamper.
"Get in," he said.
"All of us?"
"All of us."
It was a small stall, and the three of us filled it.
Hot water ran over my shoulders, and I stood with my eyes shut and let it.
Tommy took the soap.
He worked it between his big palms until it foamed, and then he laid his hands on my shoulders and began to wash me.
He did it slowly and exactly.
His thumbs dug into the muscle at the base of my neck and loosened a week of knots.
I made a noise I was not proud of.
"There," Tommy said. "Good. Let me."
He washed my arms, one at a time, from the shoulder to the fingertips.
He stopped on the thin white scar on my forearm and ran his thumb along the line.
"Do you want me to skip it?" he asked.
"No," I said. "Kiss it."
He bent his head under the spray and kissed the scar, the whole length of it, and the water ran down his back.
Behind me, Vince had knelt on the wet tile.
He lifted my foot and washed it in his hands, the toes and the arch.
