Chapter 9: The Bed at the Curb
On Monday morning I opened the bedroom door and let them in.
Neither of them had crossed that threshold.
Tommy stopped in the hall with his hand flat on the frame.
Vince, for once, said nothing at all.
It was a plain room, white and tidy, with a tall mahogany bed that had been Carlo's grandmother's.
The sun came through the shutters in stripes.
I had slept in that bed for seven years, on the right side, as far from the middle as it would go.
"I want it gone," I said.
"The bed?" Vince asked.
"The bed. The sheets, the frame, all of it."
I walked in and pulled the quilt off with one hard tug.
"He did it on that side," I said. "On Thursday nights, mostly. For four years."
I said it flatly, in my nurse's voice.
Nobody moved.
"I've never said it out loud to anyone," I said. "I'm saying it now so you'll know what I'm doing."
Tommy's face did not change.
But his hand on the doorframe tightened until the knuckles went white.
"What are you doing?" he asked quietly.
"Taking it back. Strip the bed."
Vince was already moving.
He tore off the sheets and balled them up and threw them at the wall.
Tommy went out to his car and came back with a toolbox.
