Chapter 12: Wynne's Charge

By evening the whole palace knew.

The Alphas had already chosen what to do about it.

The council hall was a round room of black wood and iron lamps, with benches in tiers for the eleven Alphas of Eldmark.

They sat in a ring, in their furs and rings.

All of them looked at me.

The King sat in the high chair.

Alaric stood at the foot of the dais with his arms folded.

He had not left my side since noon.

Wynne stood at the speaker's stone in a plain grey gown, with her hair loose.

She folded her hands.

Garrick was not there.

He was in the cells, with a physician on either side, grey in the face and coughing.

"I speak for Vandeleur," Wynne said, and her voice shook just enough. "I speak as the Alpha's fated mate, because the Alpha cannot."

"Say your charge," said the King.

"Elspeth Chenoweth is a witch."

A rustle ran through the benches.

I did not move.

"For nine years she lived among us at Vandeleur," Wynne said. "She seemed harmless. A wolfless cook, a poor creature. Our Luna out of the Alpha's pity."

She drew a shaky breath.

"But today the moon glass showed her wolf. Sealed, they say. Then why was she not weak? Why has her cooking healed the sick for years?"
