Chapter 9: The Burned Hand

"Finally," the voice said again.

I sat up so fast I nearly knocked Alaric off the bed.

"Who said that?"

"Said what?" He pushed up on one elbow, alert at once.

"A woman. In my head."

His face changed.

"You heard a woman," he said slowly.

"Elspeth." He sat all the way up, and his hand closed over mine. "Wolves can speak to their own mates this way. They cannot speak to anyone else. And you have no wolf."

"I know I don't."

"Then who is talking to you?"

I pressed the heel of my hand to my forehead.

The voice did not come again.

The mark on my shoulder pulsed once, warm, almost fond.

"I don't know," I said. "I don't know. But my head isn't hurting. It feels like somebody opened a window."

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then he drew me back down against his chest, and I felt his lips move against my hair, saying something I couldn't catch.

I slept better than I had in six years.

The fire burned down to embers, and for once I did not wake to count the hours.

In the morning I walked down to the kitchen alone to start Alaric's breakfast.

The corridor from the east stair was long and quiet, hung with old tapestries of hunts and harvests.
