Chapter 18: Moon Court
They set the Council's twelve carved chairs out along the terrace, facing the lawn.
The packs stood around the grass below in a great ring, five and six deep, back to the trees.
The moon cleared the ridge and hung there, white and enormous.
My father sat in seat eleven with his ring hand on his knee.
Lyla stood on the grass at the west edge of the ring, in her white silk, ten paces from the center.
I stood at the east edge, ten paces the other way, in my dark red dress.
Between us, in the middle of the lawn, the Lycan King knelt on the frozen grass with his shirt off.
The long scar down his ribs was silver in the moonlight.
He'd looked at me once before he knelt.
Just once. Gray eyes, steady.
"Whatever happens," he'd said, "you decided it."
The old healer's chair had been wheeled out onto the grass beside him.
She held the old King's knife across her knees, out of its sheath.
"It doesn't need much," she said, loud enough for the ring. "Just the door."
