Chapter 18: Say It Without the Book
"I will..." Gunnar said again, and shut his mouth.
He lay on his side on the cabin bed with the bandage white across his ribs.
His eyes were closed.
"Try another way," I said. "Don't say it like a speech. Say what you want."
"I want you."
"Everyone knows that. Say the other part."
"I choose you."
It came out flat as a dropped plate.
He heard it too.
His face twisted, and he turned it into the pillow.
"That's the line," he said. "That's what the seer would write. I can't get past it, Thora."
"Say it differently."
"There is no different. Every time the words come up in my mouth, I hear her voice."
"Whose voice?"
"Hers.
The woman who wrote my page.
Reading it out in the hall, in eleven twenty-six, with my mother's coffin not a year cold."
His fist closed on the quilt.
