Chapter 19: Alone
I wore his flannel shirt to the infirmary on Friday, because it was the only warm thing in my flat that smelled like anyone.
I had not seen him in five days.
I had not called, and he had not called.

Maud Aske sat at her scrubbed table with a kettle going and a small bundle of oilcloth in front of her.
"Sit," she said. "Put on the gloves."
I pulled on my white cotton gloves, and she untied the bundle.
Inside lay a thin book bound in green cloth, no bigger than my hand, with a brown stain across the cover.
"This belonged to the last seer's apprentice," Maud said.
"She taught me my letters, in a barn in Aroostook County, in eighteen seventy-nine."
"You knew her."
"She raised me. She is the only person I ever called mother."
"Maud."
"Read it, child. It's not long."
I opened the cover.
The ink was brown and small, in English, in a careful schoolteacher's hand.
