Chapter 23: The Bite
He changed at the edge of the Hall's field, in the dark, between two trucks.
I held his clothes while it happened.
Then the great silver-gold wolf shook himself, knelt on his front legs, and let me climb onto his back.
I wound both fists in the thick fur at his shoulders.
"Go," I said.
He ran.
Two miles of black spruce and blue snow went by in a roaring rush.
The wind tore tears from my eyes, and the ridge fell away beneath us, and I laughed out loud into the cold.
The Stone sat at the very top of Cutter Ridge, in a ring of bare trees.
It was a flat table of gray granite as wide as a bed, and it steamed.
Snow touched it and vanished.
"Warm," I said, sliding off his back and putting my palm on it. "It's warm."
The wolf huffed.
The change took him quickly, a fold and a ripple.
Gunnar stood up out of it, a naked man in a cloud of his own breath.
He took his bundle of clothes from my arm and dropped it on the rock.
The stars were thick and very low.
On the longest night of the year, they looked close enough to touch.
"Marking Night was for the pairs who were already bound," he said.
"This is the one for the pairs who aren't yet.
It happens once in a thousand years."
"Then don't waste it."
"I never waste anything."
He took my face in his big hands, and kissed me.
He tasted of snow and of the woods.
His kiss was hungry and certain, and it went on and on.
My knees went soft, and I held his forearms to stay up.
He lifted my cardigan over my head.
