Chapter 18: The Dowager's Last Word
The Dowager Countess Quillon had been brought to the Regatta between two guards, in a plain black gown with no pearls at her neck.
She had been summoned by the Queen to answer for the Fund.
She stood at the foot of the royal barge's gangway, grey-faced, and she had heard every word the bowman said.
Perrine watched her hear it.
She watched her look at the arrow with its blue silk bow, and at Perrine alive on the planks.
Then, slowly, at the girl in white.
Nobody spoke.
The King lifted a hand.
"Lady Quillon," he said. "A purse of your house's crest. What have you to say?"
The Dowager's chin came up.
Her ropes of pearls were gone, and without them her neck was thick and old and mottled.
"It was mine," she said.
A hiss ran round the pier.
"I paid the man. I hated that girl." She stabbed a finger at Perrine, and it shook. "She humiliated my house. She took my pearls and my place, and I wanted her dead. I did it alone. My ward knew nothing. She's a child, Your Majesty, a trusting child, she never saw any of it."
Perrine felt her skin go cold.
