Chapter 12: Clear Morning
"Prim," Linden said.
She turned and ran.
He tried to get up after her and the gold slid out from under the furs, and the room went white.
When he opened his eyes again, the hall was full of noon light from the high slit windows.
He was clear.
His head was clear. His skin was his own skin. The heat had gone back down into the mark.
He was also wearing nothing but his trousers, under a wolfskin, on a dragon's gold.
He remembered everything.
Every word.
He pulled the wolfskin over his head and groaned into it.
"Good afternoon," Ivor said.
He was sitting in a chair a few feet away with a cup of tea in each hand.
He looked like he hadn't slept at all.
"Kill me," Linden said through the fur.
"No. I've had a long night."
"I took my shirt off at you."
"You did."
"I begged."
"Repeatedly." Ivor held out a cup. "Drink this. The grandmothers made it. It tastes like a boot."
Linden came out from under the wolfskin and took the tea.
He couldn't look at Ivor.
"I'm sorry," he said to the cup.
"For what? Being sick?" Ivor shook his head. "It broke at dawn. The book says it'll come back, sooner each time. Next time I'll have more snow ready."
"And Prim heard."
"Prim heard."
"Where is she?"
"On the east battlement. She's been throwing snowballs at the sky for two hours." Ivor drank his own tea and made a face at it. "The kits are scared to go near her."
Linden found her up there in the wind.
She had her back to the door and a pile of snowballs at her feet.
She threw one as hard as she could at nothing.
