Chapter 29: What He Owes
Linden didn't take it right away.
He stood on the top step and looked at it in Osric's hand.
His mother had worn it every day of her life.
She'd put it round Linden's neck herself, the morning he rode to Blackmere to be bonded, because she said he should have something of home.
Osric had taken it off him that same night.
"For safekeeping," he'd said, and Linden never saw it again.
"I opened the strongroom myself," Osric said. "Last night. When I got back from the moor."
His voice was hoarse.
"There's a box of your things in there too. Your father's pen. Some books. I'll send them."
"Send them to the Hollow."
"I will."
Osric didn't come up a single step.
He stood at the bottom with his hand out and waited.
Behind Linden he could feel Ivor in the gateway, the heat of him on his back.
Ivor had told him once he would take Blackmere's roof off with his teeth.
He just stood there and let Linden do this himself.
