Chapter 8: Full House

Ivor leaned the broom against the gate.

He came down the steps one at a time until he stood over the old elder.

He was twice her height.

A kit at the back started to cry.

"There's a goat," Ivor said.

The elder blinked. "Yes."

"It doesn't go in my hall."

"No, Grayle."

"Nobody touches the gold. Nobody brings a candle near the library. Wipe your feet." He turned his head and looked straight at Linden. "And nobody lies to me."

"Is that a yes?" the elder asked.

Ivor sighed so deeply a little ash came out of his nose.

"Yes," he said. "Come in. You're mine, the lot of you, under the law. Gods help me."

Forty foxes walked through his gate.

Linden walked in last.

As he passed, Ivor muttered, "Not a village, I said."

"You opened the east wing."

"To air it."

"You bought sixty blankets." Linden had seen them stacked in the hall. "The stableman told me. With your own gold."

"Moths," Ivor said darkly, and walked off.

By the end of the first week, the foxes had taken over his keep.

The kitchen was the first to fall.

Six grandmothers moved in with their own knives and threw the cook out of her own chair.

She sat in the corner for one afternoon, sulking.

Then one of them handed her a bowl of dough and asked her opinion, and by supper she was running them like an army.

There was bread every morning.

There was soup every night.

There was a fight about salt that lasted three days.

The kits were worse.

There were eleven of them, and none of them had ever seen a dragon.

On the second morning they found Ivor asleep in the hoard-hall in his true shape.

He was curled up on the gold.

By the time Linden got there, there were four kits on the dragon's head.
