Chapter 14: The Safe

Dell stood in the doorway behind me with her keys still in her hand.

"Somebody was in my flour," she said.

She said it.

I walked around the white cone without stepping in it.

The window to the fire escape was shut and latched from inside.

The lock on the door wasn't scratched.

Her laptop sat on the couch. Her tip jar sat on the counter, forty-one dollars in quarters and ones.

Nobody had touched them.

"Call the police," I said.

Two officers came at a quarter to two.

One of them was eating sunflower seeds.

He looked at the flour and the tin and the window, and then at us.

"So no forced entry," he said. "Nothing valuable taken."

"A notebook was taken."

"What kind of notebook?"

"A black one."

He wrote that down very slowly.

"Who else has a key?"

Dell looked at me.

I looked at the flour.

"Nobody," I said.

"Ma'am, somebody does." He closed his pad. "Lock's fine. Window's fine. Whoever it was walked in with a key and knew where to look. You might want to ask your friends."

They left at two fifteen.

Dell sat down on the kitchen floor beside the flour and didn't sweep it.

"Ro," she said quietly. "Only three people knew it was in there."

"I know."

"You, me and him."

"I know, Del."

"You gave him my key at four o'clock."

"I know."

I picked up the black phone and called the only number in it.

It rang out.

At two thirty a text came.

"In meetings early. Are you both safe?"

I read it three times.

Then I turned the phone face down on the counter.

I didn't sleep.

Neither did Dell.

At seven she got a call and put it on speaker without asking me.

It was the night bellman.
