Chapter 5: The Librarian

"She's my consultant," Colm said. "Get out of my chair."

Ryland didn't hurry.

He stood up and stretched.

"A consultant." He looked me over again. "From where? The public library?"

"From London," Colm said.

"She doesn't look like London. She looks like she's about to tell me my books are overdue."

I kept my eyes on the carpet and my voice half a tone low.

"Good evening, Mr. Kinsella."

"Oh, it talks." He grinned at his uncle. "You could have just asked me how the hotel's doing. I'd have told you. Five stars, Uncle Colm. Three weeks out."

"Then you've got nothing to worry about," Colm said.

Ryland walked past me to the door.

His shoulder bumped mine.

He didn't say sorry.

He had no idea whose shoulder it was.

The ring on its chain lay cold against my skin all night.

The next morning at the eight o'clock lineup, he came for me.

Lineup happens in the lobby before the doors get busy. Forty staff in a half circle. Front desk, bell, concierge, housekeeping, a few cooks in white coats in the back.

Dell was in the back.

Ryland stood in the middle with his coffee.

"Before we start," he said. "Some of you have met our consultant."

He pointed his cup at me.

"Jane. Uncle Colm brought her over from London to make sure we're all folding our napkins right."

A few people laughed, nervous.

"Go on, Jane. You've had a whole day. Tell us what's wrong with my hotel."

The half circle waited.

I could feel Dell trying not to kill him with her eyes.

"The towels on eleven are fraying," I said slowly. "They've been fraying since April, when the linen budget moved into the upgrade fund."

The head housekeeper lifted her chin.
