Chapter 21: Dewitt Falls
Augustin did not hurry.
He stood at the head of the black table with both hands on the cane.
He looked down the row of directors one face at a time.
"Nine years ago my grandson Phillip lost his sight on a road in Wisconsin," he said.
"The report you were given said that my grandson Dewitt was thrown from the car."
"That's the report," Dewitt said. "Because it's true."
"Bring him in," Augustin said.
The door opened, and the butler walked in without his gloves.
I heard some of the directors draw breath.
They knew him.
For forty years he had poured their coffee and fetched their coats, and none of them had ever seen him look straight at a board.
"I drove Mr. Dewitt that night, and I said nothing for nine years," he said.
"He's lying," Dewitt said, but he said it to the table, and the table looked away.
Augustin slid the form down the wood to the gray director.
She read it through her glasses with her mouth turning thin, and passed it to the man on her left without a word.
