Chapter 4: Whose Hand
We spread the photo out on the kitchen table that afternoon, one print of it from the lodge's old inkjet, and a magnifying glass Idris borrowed from the desk in the study.
He pulled his chair around to my side of the table and left a hand's width of air between our arms.
"Right there," he said. "Look at the background."
Behind Cadell's shoulder there was a wall of old license plates and a lit beer sign shaped like an antler.
"That's the back booth at the Antler," Idris said. "It's the one Cadell takes, because he can see the door."
"So he was there."
"He told Seren he was, and he told her why. A friend from the feed store wanted him to look at a horse trailer."
"Which friend?"
"He doesn't remember the name. That bothers me."
I bent closer over the glass.
The hand on his arm belonged to a woman, with short clean nails and no rings.
She wore the cuff of a black leather jacket, pushed back, and the sleeve cut off at the edge of the print.
Half the pack owned a black leather jacket.
I owned one myself.
"Whoever took this was sitting two tables away," I said. "Cadell is looking at the camera."
"Not at the camera," Idris said. "At someone standing behind it, and he's laughing."
"At who?"
"I don't know."
He turned the print over and read what his phone showed him instead.
"It went up at six this morning, from a number nobody has saved. Forty people saw it before Seren did."
I put my coffee down too close to the edge of the table.
