Chapter 6: Live at the Dock

I did not go down the steps.

I walked down to the chain instead, slowly, so the camera had to back up to keep me in the shot.

"Sadie, babe, you look great," Garner said. "Just be natural. Say hi to everyone."

"Who is everyone?"

The camera operator glanced at the small red light on the top of his rig.

"We're live," Garner said, more softly. "It's a surprise for the followers. They miss us."

"You're live right now?"

"Bree's pushing it out from the van. She set it up. It's fine."

I looked at the van.

I could see the dark shape of a laptop through the windshield and a boy in headphones bent over it.

The counter on the corner of the camera screen said forty-two thousand watching.

It was climbing.

"Garner, you told the court you'd leave her out of everything."

"She's not here. It's just you. Just us." He opened his arms. "Everybody's been so worried. We could do the sign-off. One take. You say waves, I say wind, and it all goes away."

"No."

"Sadie."

"No. And you will not say it either."

The three old men from the yard had come up behind the chain.

One of them was missing two fingers.

They stood in a row with their arms crossed and said nothing.

Garner looked at them and tried a smile.

"Hey, fellas. We're just filming a little family reunion."

"Where's the family?" the one with nine fingers said.

I turned to the lens.

I had spent eight years learning how to look into it.

I'd never once used it for what I wanted.

"Hi," I said. "I'm Sadie. A lot of you know me. A hundred thousand of you watched me sign this account over to my husband in a courtroom on Friday."
