Chapter 19: He Answers

I had been asked a lot of questions in my life, and none of them had been this easy.

That was the surprise.

I had expected to search for the answer, and it was already in my mouth.

"Neither of you will like how long it took me," I said.

"Say it anyway," said Inés.

I crossed the little room and stopped in front of her chair.

"I told you at the site I'd find out what I want, not what's owed."

"You did."

"I found out. It took about a day."

Valeria made a small sound, and I did not look at her.

"The sofa at the studio wasn't a hiding place," I said. "I could have gone to Emilio's, or my mother's. I could have rented a room anywhere in Guadalajara. I stayed on that sofa because it was ten steps from you."

Inés's hands tightened on her coat.

"I went to the site every night to build a stair, and I told myself it was the stair. It wasn't. I wanted to see your hands on the drawings."

"Rodrigo..."

"Let me finish. You said I should do it with my whole mouth."

She almost laughed, and her eyes were bright.

"I love you," I said. "I have for longer than I let myself know. I think I loved you the night you taught me to read a section drawing, and I sat down next to a woman who didn't love me and called it a life."

"That's not fair to her," Inés said softly.

"No, it isn't." I turned my head. "Vale, I'm sorry. That was cruel, and it wasn't true. You did love me."
