Chapter 15: The Freeway
The sedan sat in a tow yard off the Lodge freeway with its rear end folded.
Marty and I got there at ten on Thursday morning, and the man at the gate took twenty dollars to look the other way.
It was a Garland sedan, two years old, silver, with a child seat in the back.
The rear subframe had come loose on the right side.
I knelt in the frozen gravel and put my flashlight into the wheel well.
There was the mount.
It had split along the same line as the one in my toolbox, a thin dark crack through bright metal.
"Same steel," I said.
"How do you know?"
"Because the thickness is wrong, and I can see the stamp."
Marty crouched beside me.
"Where's the driver?"
"The tow man says a woman. She walked away with a cut on her arm, and the child seat was empty."
I stayed on my knees for a second, looking at the empty seat.
"The Lodge was doing sixty-five when it let go," Marty said. "The whole back end swung into the next lane."
