Chapter 16: Shift Change
Saturday morning came up gray and freezing, and I stood at the east gate of the Garland plant at a quarter to six.
I held the cracked bracket in my right hand and my old badge in my left.
The badge no longer opened any door.
I had brought it anyway.
Behind me were twelve men in Rainey jackets and a woman with a notebook from a Detroit paper.
Two camera crews stood with them, and a man held a boom mic over a steaming coffee.
Cleo stood on my left in her black coat, close enough that I felt her warmth and far enough that she was not touching me.
She had printed fifty copies of the letter, and she was handing them out to anyone who stopped.
The first shift of the day was coming off, and the second was walking in.
They slowed when they saw me.
Some of them knew me, and some of them had seen the video from October.
All of them could see the bracket.
I did not climb on anything.
