Chapter 18: Her Terms
Clifford Rainey called the board for nine o'clock on Tuesday, and he came to it in a wheelchair with a blanket on his knees.
The same three board members sat at the walnut table in good shoes, and the portrait of his father looked down on all of us.
The crew had filled the doorway again.
I stood against the wall by the window with the black notebook in my back pocket, where it belonged.
Cleo came in last.
She wore a white shirt and charcoal trousers and she carried one sheet of paper.
She did not sit.
"I have something to say to the board, and then to my father," she said. "Please let me finish."
Clifford folded his hands over the blanket.
"On October ninth, I called Lyman Byers and told him Nick Danner was holding up a shipment."
"I knew what Lyman did to people who did that. I wanted Nick fired so I could hire him."
One of the board members drew in a breath.
"I told myself it was for the company. It was for me."
"Nick lost eighteen years of pension because of a phone call I made in four minutes."
