Chapter 16: The Papers
Calvin came to Linden Court at two in the afternoon with flowers and a leather folder.
Elise let him in.
She had left June in the hospital with a nurse and Calvin's mother, because she needed to hear this herself.
She also needed it to look like she was alone.
"You look better," Calvin said, and put the white roses on the hall table.
"My daughter has a line in her arm."
"I know. I'm sick about it. I called the ward six times." He tried the sad smile. "Can we sit?"
They sat at the dining table where she had eaten five years of dinners alone.
The tall double doors behind her chair were pulled shut.
Behind them, in the next room, Jodie held a phone, Margaret sat with her coat on, and two men in dark suits sat on kitchen stools, very quietly.
Elise folded her hands.
"Talk," she said.
Calvin opened the folder and laid it flat.
"I've been a fool," he said. "I let Selena turn me around. I've ended it with her, completely, and Nolan can have her."
"And Miles?"
"Selena's problem. Mother's decided to take him, and that suits me."
"He's your son."
"He's an accident," Calvin said. "I've never wanted anything but this house and this family. You, and June."
He slid a document across the table.
"This is a trust for June. Her school, her future, this house in her name. I'd manage it until she's grown, and all you'd need to do is move your mother's shares in with it, so the family has one voice."
"My mother's shares."
"Your mother will never listen to me, Ellie. She'll listen to you."
