You Ignored My Birthday So I Erased Myself From The Family novel · Chapter 16 of 24

Chapter 16: Suspended

Hollis Supply was a long tan building on the edge of town with a lumberyard out back.

I had never been inside it, in eighteen years of hearing Dad talk about it at dinner.

On Monday morning I stood in the lobby at seven fifty-eight with the folder under my arm.

Noah had driven me and was waiting outside, because I had asked him to.

A receptionist took one look at me and said, "He's expecting you."

His office was on the second floor, with glass walls that looked out over a sales floor of twelve desks.

The boss from the party sat behind a desk the size of a door.

Without the suit jacket, he looked older and more tired.

"Ms. Carroway," he said. "Sit down. Thank you for coming."

"You said bring everything."

"I'd like to see your accounting. I read your grandmother's copy twice last night, and I'd like to see the certified one."

I put it in front of him.

He read for ten minutes without speaking, and I watched the sales floor through the glass.

People were arriving, hanging coats, turning on monitors.
