You Ignored My Birthday So I Erased Myself From The Family novel · Chapter 19 of 24

Chapter 19: Chase

By the time Noah and I got to the parking lot behind the hardware store, the food truck was gone.

A man in a feed cap was standing where it had been, counting something into his wallet.

"Silver truck? Red awning?" he said, when I asked. "Bought it an hour ago. The kid wanted twenty thousand five hundred cash."

"Did he show you a title?"

"Sure. His name on it. Nice kid. He seemed in a hurry."

"Did he say why?"

"Said his old man was in trouble and he needed cash for a lawyer."

I stood on the asphalt and did the math.

My grandfather's money had bought that truck, and it had just gone for half, to a stranger in a feed cap.

Not a single cent of it was going to anyone who had earned it.

"Let it go," Noah said quietly.

"I'm not letting it go."

"I know. I mean tonight. Let it go for tonight."

I went back to work.

I flipped eggs for the dinner crowd and refilled coffee, and I did not think about Chase at all, apart from every thirty seconds.

At twenty to ten, with the dining room nearly empty, the back door crashed open against the wall.
