Chapter 20: Graduation

Graduation was on Saturday, June sixth, on the football field at ten in the morning.

It was already hot, and the folding chairs on the grass were the kind that pinched.

I wore a blue gown and a cap with a bobby pin through the tassel.

I had a seat in the third row of the graduates.

On one side sat a girl who had cried since eight o'clock, and on the other a boy with a pocket full of air horns.

Behind the rope, in the guest stands, I could see the people who had come for me.

Noah's mother wore a yellow dress and a hat that was making a statement.

Noah stood next to her in a shirt and tie, looking like a man who had been told it was his funeral.

Grandma sat in the front row in her church coat, with her cane across her knees.

She was already glaring at anyone who tried to share her bench.

Four chairs.

That was the allowance for each graduate, and three of mine were filled.

The fourth was empty, saved for Penelope, with her name on a slip of paper tucked in the seat.
