Chapter 10: Part Two

"Deanna Garvin," Preston said, loud enough for the glass to carry it. "I came three thousand miles to fix this."

"Get up, Preston."

"Not until you hear me out."

Kenzie circled to get my face in the shot.

"The Loyalty Lab family voted," Preston said. "Eighty-one percent want us back together. I've thought about it a lot. And I forgive you."

"For what?"

"For the video. For embarrassing my dad. For everything." He held the box higher. "It's two carats. Mom picked it. We start over. You come home, we do the clerk, I'm there for the birth."

I looked at the ring.

"Is this one about a contract too?"

"This is about our baby."

"My baby. And the answer's no."

"You haven't even looked at it."

"I don't need to look at it. I looked at the first one for a year and it never fit."

Preston's face went red from the collar up.

He stood up fast, the box still open.

"You're doing this because of her, aren't you?" He jerked his head at Kenzie. "You can't stand that she's got something you haven't. You've always been jealous."

"Of what?"

"Of everything!"

"Here's my answer, for the eighty-one percent," I said to the lens. "I'm not coming home. I'm not marrying you. I don't forgive you, and I didn't ask you to forgive me."

"You'll never do better than me."

"I already have. I live in London and I'm allowed to eat whatever I want."

The stairs creaked.

Benedict came down them slowly, in his rolled shirtsleeves, with his reading glasses still on his head.

He stopped beside me and looked at Preston.

"Mr. Elstow," he said. "You're on private property without an appointment. Filming our staff without consent. You've had your answer."

"Who the hell are you?"

"I run this building."
