Chapter 11: The Leak

The letter said Hartwell's London lab had leaked "unverified and fabricated test results" to a social-media personality to damage a competitor.

It asked for two million pounds.

By noon, head office had Benedict on a video call in the boardroom with the door shut.

I could see him through the glass.

He sat very straight and said very little.

A vice president from Pittsburgh filled the big screen.

When Benedict came out, the twins stopped pretending to work.

"Well?" said the one on the left.

"I'm on notice," Benedict said. "If the leak came from this building, I'm finished. If our results don't hold up, I'm finished. They'd like to know which by the end of next week."

He went back to his office.

I sat at my desk and played Kenzie's video one more time with the sound up.

"Sibutramine," she said, holding up a pink mug. "Eleven milligrams a sachet. That's what my sister is telling people. It's not even public! It's not even confirmed! She's making it up!"

Not public. Not confirmed.

My words. In my order.

I had said them to exactly one person.

I closed the laptop.

I went into Benedict's office and shut the door behind me.

"It was me," I said.

He looked up.

"I told my mother. Two weeks ago. Her church was giving BrideGlow to a pregnant girl at a shower, and I called her and told her what was in it. The numbers. That it wasn't public yet."

He didn't say anything.

"I told her not to tell anyone. She promised."

"Right," he said.

"You said this stays in this room. I took it out of the room. I'll tell head office. I'll put it in writing. It's not your fault."

He took his glasses off and set them on the desk.

"Did the girl drink it?"

"What?"

"The pregnant girl. At the church."

I stared at him.
