Chapter 17: Sesame

I looked at the message on the screen.

Then I scrolled down.

Preston's mother had answered ten minutes later.

"Perfect. Two dishes in sesame oil, then. Under all that chili she'll never taste it."

My mother had sent back a thumbs up.

A yellow thumbs up.

Brody had his head in his hands.

Benedict had stopped moving entirely.

"Hives," I said. "And my throat swells. Not all the way. Enough that I have to sit up all night with an antihistamine."

"Deanna," Brody said.

"Eight weeks pregnant. Alone in my car on the highway."

I thought about the orange soup steaming in front of me. "Eat, sweetheart. You're family now."

I'd eaten rice and a cracker from my purse.

That was the only reason.

"His father said forget the allergy idea," I said. "On the video. I heard him."

"They did it anyway," Benedict said quietly.

I thought about Kenzie's face on my landing when I'd said, "Next time, try sesame."

That flinch.

She'd known exactly which two plates.

On Sunday we called my mother from Gran's kitchen table.

Gran had cleared away the roast and put a pot of tea in the middle.
