Chapter 13: What He Paid
Adriana's POV
I hit him.
It was an open hand across the cheek that was not bleeding, and the crack of it went around the stone walls.
He turned his face back to me and waited for the next one.
"Twelve years," I said. "I sat behind a hotel desk in Lisbon and hated you every single day."
"I know."
"You don't know anything." My hands were shaking, so I took his broken one again to make them stop. "You put me on that plane and you never called. Not once. I didn't know if my boys were alive."
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
"He had a man on my phone the first year. He had a man on my mail the second." Ruggero kept his eyes on the rack of bottles behind me. "One call to Lisbon and he would have known you were breathing. The next night someone else would have finished what I wouldn't."
"And the third year? The sixth? The tenth?"
"By then I didn't know what to say to you."
That was a plain answer, and I hated that it was true.
"I'll tell you mine," he said. "Since we're doing this."
"Say it."
"You walked through that gate with a ticket in your hand, and you didn't look back at the car." His jaw worked. "I sat there with the engine running until the plane was gone. I thought, if she turns around, I'll go in after her."
"You had just put a hood on me and carried me down the stairs."
"I know."
"What was I supposed to look back at?"
"Nothing," he said. "You were right not to."
I let out a short, ugly laugh, and he didn't smile.
