Chapter 8: Her Terms
We did not talk in the car.
Ruggero drove with his right hand, and I sat with my knees together and my own hands locked in my lap.
I had told him the hotel, not the house, and he had not asked where else.
The suite on the ninth floor was as I had left it, with the green apples in the bowl and the river black in the window.
He shut the door behind us.
Neither of us turned on a lamp.
"Terms," he said.
"I'm changing them."
"Adriana."
"Don't say my name like you're going to talk me out of it." I took off my earrings and put them on the table. "I'm forty-seven. I've been alone for twelve years. I know what I want, and I'm not asking for permission."
"What do you want?"
"You. Tonight. With the door shut."
He stood in the dark with his jaw set.
"The glove stays on," he said.
"I didn't ask you to take it off."
"You'll want to."
"Then I'll tell you so."
I walked to him and put my palm flat on his chest.
Under the shirt, his heart was going hard.
He covered my hand with his right and held it there.
"Then take off your jacket," I said.
He did.
I undid his tie and let it drop, and then the buttons, one at a time, while he stood and let me.
His chest was broad and scarred, with gray in the dark hair, and I put my mouth to the middle of it.
He swore under his breath.
His hand slid into my hair and tightened.
"Turn around," he said.
I turned, and he found the zipper of the green dress.
He drew it down slowly, one inch and then another, with his knuckles against my spine.
