"You opened it?" I said.
"Once," said Barrett.
"Last spring, when she was in Vienna and I needed cash."
"There was a gray folder in the lower box with a name on the tab."
"I didn't read it."
"I put it back and washed my hands."
Maeve laughed, once, without any humor.
"Prince Charming washed his hands," she said.
I took the key off his palm.
"Where is she tonight?" I said.
"Hosting the Showcase donors for dinner at the house on Beacon Hill," said Barrett.
"Twelve people who've written checks this year, and the woman from the bank."
"They sit down at eight, and she does it every year."
"I live there," he said.
"Technically."
I looked at Maeve.
Maeve went into her bedroom and came back with a black dress and a very good opinion of herself.
The house on Mount Vernon Street had black shutters and a gas lamp, and a front door painted the color of a good red wine.
Barrett's key fit it.
Maeve stayed in the Subaru at the curb with the engine running and her phone in her hand.
