Chapter 15: Weak

It took Jasper and me together to carry him up the east stair.

Ambrose weighed what a flooded river weighs, and he dripped on every step.

"Put him on the bed," I said. "On his side. Get the coat off."

Jasper's hands shook as he peeled the black wool off his brother's shoulders.

Underneath there was no skin at all, only the dark surface of him.

It rippled thin, and the stars had drained down to a few dim sparks.

"He's so cold," Jasper whispered. "He's never been this cold."

"Go and sit with Pippa. Tell the guard that Goldie is reading her a bedtime story and he can stay in his chair."

"Winnie..."

"Go."

He went, with all the eyes on his hands streaming.

I locked the door and I sat on the edge of the bed and put my palm flat on Ambrose's chest.

The cold went through my arm to the elbow.

His heart knocked once, and I counted ten seconds before it knocked again.

I counted it three times.

Then I took off my sweater and my shoes and got under the quilt with him.

I could think of nothing else on earth to do.

I pulled the whole long shape of him against me.

I tucked his head under my chin and rubbed his back the way I used to rub Pippa's when she had a fever.
