Chapter 21: The Cure
On the fifth night, the lamp by his bed did not dim.
I noticed it from the doorway.
I stood there in my nightshirt with a mug of plain hot water.
A small gold bulb burned steadily on the nightstand next to a man who ate light.
"It is staying," Ambrose said.
He was sitting up against the headboard with the quilt over his knees.
His dark hair was dry for once, and he looked at me with gray eyes that did not have stars in them.
"The deputy's notebook was right," I said. "Slow is better."
"The deputy's notebook was his employer's father's notebook. I would prefer not to be grateful to it."
"Be grateful to the cook. She had it right with a spoon."
I set the mug down and sat on the bed.
His chest rose under the quilt, and I laid my palm flat against it without asking.
Warm.
His skin was warm, and under it, quick and small and unmistakable, a heartbeat knocked once, and again, and again.
