Chapter 6: Why Blind

Lunch with Mr. Roake was a table for two and a tray of cold salmon.

Jasper came anyway.

He walked in behind me with his sunglasses rattling and sat at the end of the table.

Mr. Roake looked at him.

"Jasper is not invited," he said.

"I'm an heir," Jasper said. "I'm always invited."

"Then be quiet."

"Fine."

He wasn't quiet.

He turned his whole glittering head toward Mr. Roake and watched him with a kind of terrible attention.

I put down my fork.

"Why did the Trust hire me?" I asked.

"I'm sorry?"

"Seven assistants quit. I'm the eighth. I'm the one who can't see. Why?"

"Miss Garrick." Mr. Roake sighed, and I heard him fold his napkin. "The Trust believes in inclusive hiring."

"That's not an answer."

"Your file showed a significant visual impairment. The Trust's insurance covers corrective care, which is a benefit that few other applicants required."

"So you hired me for the insurance."

"We hired you for your qualifications."

Jasper made a small noise.

"He's lying," he whispered, loud enough for the room. "The whole front of him lit up."

"Jasper," Mr. Roake said sharply.

"Like a Christmas tree. Gold and red. It's even worse than the rod."

"Quiet."

"I can see everything," Jasper said, and his voice shook. "I always can."

Mr. Roake rose.

He did it slowly, and I felt the room tighten around us.

"Miss Garrick," he said. "The Trust will arrange your lenses this week."

He let that sit.

"The best money can buy, a gift from me, to apologize for the delay."
