Chapter 11: Whose Boy

Troy read the paper out loud, because his voice was the only thing in the room.

"Probability of paternity, zero percent."

He said it flat.

"The alleged father is excluded as the biological father of the child."

Nobody moved.

A small girl at the next table said, loud and clear, "What's excluded?"

Her mother put a hand over her mouth.

I stood up.

I put Poppy's blanket over her face with one hand and with the other I reached across the table for Eli.

He was still holding the syrup.

His eyes had gone to Lacey, and his mouth was tight and worried.

I did not know what he understood, and I did not want to find out in a cafeteria.

"Eli," I said. "Will you come with me for a minute?"

"Mom?"

Lacey did not answer.

She stood with her fingers curled into the back of her chair, staring at the paper in Troy's hand.

I looked toward the back wall.

Caleb was already coming, and he did not wait to be asked.

He crouched next to Eli with his hands loose and said, in the same low voice he used at the diner, "I hear the kitchen here has the best pancakes in town. Do you want to go check?"

Eli looked at his mother.

"Go on, baby," she said, so faintly I almost missed it.

Caleb took the boy's hand and walked him out through the side door.

The door swung shut.

Then Troy turned to Lacey.

"Say it," he said.

"Troy, I can explain."

"Everybody keeps saying that." His voice cracked. "Whose is he?"
