Chapter 14: The Room Upstairs
Eli would not eat the grilled cheese.
He sat on the edge of the narrow bed in Caleb's sister's room, with his coat still zipped, and held the plate on his knees.
I sat on the other end with Poppy in the carrier at my feet.
My mother had said on the phone, "Absolutely not," and then, "Fine, I'll bring the bag."
I had not gone home.
I could not make myself walk out and leave him with a locked door and a stranger's quilt.
"She'll come back," Eli said.
"I hope so."
"She did it once before. When Grandma died. She went to the lake for a night."
"Did she come back?"
"In the morning." He pressed a finger into the cheese. "She was crying, so I made her toast."
I did not trust my voice, so I said nothing.
"Are you mad at me?" he asked.
"No."
"Mr. Keller is. I could tell, at breakfast. He kept looking at the door."
"That wasn't about you, Eli."
"I know." He said it flatly. "He isn't my dad. Russ is my dad. It's a secret. I'm only allowed to say it in my head."
The room was very quiet.
"Who told you?"
"Mom. She said Troy is the school dad. I wrote Russ a card for Father's Day and she made me give it to him in the truck." He looked up at me. "Did I do it wrong?"
"No." My eyes stung. "No, you did it exactly right."
I took the plate off his knees and set it on the dresser.
I put my arm around him, carefully, and he leaned his whole weight into my side.
