Chapter 13: A Hole in the Page

By noon on Wednesday the new cards had reached half of Lake Merrin.

I saw the first one in Amos's hand.

It had come to the shop that morning in an envelope addressed to me.

He held it out across the bait counter without a word, and I read it standing between a bucket of minnows and a rack of bobbers.

It was cream with a gold edge, the same stock as before.

"Colin James Rutledge and Lacey Anne Drummond request the pleasure of your company at the Rutledge Club, Saturday, October twenty-fourth, three o'clock."

"They moved it," Amos said. "The pavilion's still booked in her name, but the party's going to the club. Where the members' wives can see it."

"Who got one?"

"Everybody who got one the first time." He took his cap off and put it back. "The man at the bank. The county clerk. The preacher. All three of mine."

"They're being sent to the same five hundred and nineteen people."

"Five hundred and nineteen new stamps," Amos said. "That woman doesn't run out of money."

I turned the card over.

On the back, in Constance's own neat hand, was a line for each guest.

Mine said, in that same hand: Della, dear, we would love to see you there as a guest. No hard feelings. C.

My hand went flat on the counter.

"I'm going," I said.

Amos didn't look surprised. He wiped his hands on a rag and nodded toward the back room, where the coffee was.
