Chapter 17: Five Hundred Witnesses

Conroy's POV

Amos laid the guest list on a bait cooler and put a pencil behind his ear.

It was nine on Friday night, the shop was closed, and the only light came from the fish tank and one hanging bulb.

Della sat on an upturned crate with her knees together.

Lacey sat on the other crate, a long way from her.

I stood by the door, because I never knew what to do with my hands in rooms where I wasn't fixing something.

"Five hundred and nineteen names," Amos said. "I know sixty of them. Forty of those owe me a favor and the rest owe me money."

"That's a small army," Della said.

"It's a start." He tapped the pencil on the page. "Who do we need in the front rows at three o'clock?"

"The county clerk," I said. "She's a notary. Constance put her on the list so Colin could sign his refinance in a room that looked like a celebration."

"Is there a refinance?"

"There's a piece of paper Colin thinks is one." I took it out of my jacket and unfolded it. "It's an acknowledgment of default on my note. If he signs it, I can call the whole loan the next day."

Della read it over my arm.

"You put that in front of Colin?"

"The clerk does. In front of five hundred witnesses, so he can't say he didn't read it."

"And if he won't sign?"
