Chapter 11: One Clause

Preston got to his feet slowly, with the envelope against his chest.

His eyes were bloodshot and he had not shaved since Thursday.

"How did you get in my building?" I asked.

"Your neighbor let me in. The one with the dog." He tried a smile. "Matilda, please. Five minutes."

"Your grandmother said you wouldn't give me this."

"She called me this morning. She told me you'd ask, and I should hand it over before you had to beg." His voice cracked on beg. "She's never talked to me like that."

Behind me, boots hit the stairs two at a time.

Kirk stopped on the landing and stood there, saying nothing.

Preston saw him and flinched.

"Who's this?"

"The man who carried you off a porch," I said. "Give me the paper."

He held it out.

I opened the envelope in the hallway, in front of both of them.

It was ten pages of legal print, with the title Koehler Family Trust at the top and a late man's name on every signature line.

I turned to page six.

It was a short paragraph, in plain words.

The house, the lake property, and forty percent of Koehler Supply would pass to Preston Koehler on his thirtieth birthday, February 27, 2027, only if he was lawfully married by that date to a spouse approved in writing by the trustee.

If not, everything would go to the Koehler Foundation.

Under it, in blue ink, was a note with a date from last March.

Approved: Matilda Delaney.

Mrs. Koehler's signature sat under it, small and upright.

I read the paragraph twice.
