Chapter 15: Ten

Matilda's POV

I climbed into his lap and he took my face in both hands, careful of the bandage.

"Before this goes any further," I said, "I have to ask you something."

"Ask."

"At the party. When I wrote the zero. Did you think I deserved it?"

He went very still.

Then he let go of me with one hand and reached behind him for the jacket he had thrown over the couch arm.

He took out his wallet and unfolded a square of white card from behind his license.

"Gwen handed everyone a card at the door," he said. "I wrote this one before Preston finished talking."

I took it.

It said 10.

It was in square black pen, pressed so hard it had dented the paper.

"Nobody collected mine," Kirk said. "Kendall won, so the rest of the cards went in the trash. I kept it."

"You wrote ten for me."

"I wrote ten for the pot. I'd have taken that suite, Matilda, just to hand you the keys and drive you anywhere else." His thumb moved across my cheekbone. "I looked at you the whole time. Everybody in that room looked at her. I looked at you."

My eyes stung.

For ten years I had believed that when Kendall and I stood in the same room, every person in it picked her.

I had never once checked.

"Say it flat," I said. "I want it said flat."

"I chose you at the party. I chose you before you even had a reason to look my way."

I kissed him then, hard, with the card still in my hand.

He kissed me back hungrily, two years of wanting in it.

His hands dragged up under the gray T-shirt and found my bare ribs, and I gasped into his mouth.

"Your rule," he said against my jaw.

"My rule is dead."

"Good," he said. "I hated it."

I pulled the shirt over my head and threw it.

He looked at me.

He just looked, with his gray eyes gone dark, and my skin went hot everywhere he looked.

"God, Matilda."
