Kirk's POV

I told her at five o'clock, in the bridal room, with the door locked.

She stood in front of the mirror in the white dress with her hands at her sides, and I stood behind her where she could see my face.

"The day of," I said. "Before the doors open."

"Tell me."

"The night she went into the ER, Mrs. Koehler had her lawyer draw up a notice. It withdraws her approval of you at the exact moment of the vows. And it gives the house, the lake and the shares to the Foundation."

Matilda turned around.

"And you witnessed it."

"I signed the line. She asked me to keep the form from you, so Preston couldn't get it out of you or your phone." I made myself keep looking at her. "I should have told you that night. I'm sorry."

She stared at me for a long moment.

Then she put her hands on either side of my face.

"You kept a promise," she said. "To a woman who was lying in a bed. For seven weeks."

"I did."

"You're the first person who's ever told me he was keeping a secret, and then actually kept it." She kissed me, hard. "Don't apologize to me again."

"Okay."

"Go sit down. I'll see you at the end of the aisle."

"I'll be in the second row."

"I know where you'll be," she said.

I left her there.

The ballroom was filling when I came down the hall.

Gwen caught me by the sleeve at the doors, in a green dress with her red hair pinned up.

"I'm going to be sick."

"You're going to be fine."
