Chapter 8: Forty Friends

I called the grandmother back from my childhood bedroom, sitting on the bed with the door shut.

She picked up on the first ring.

"Matilda," she said. "Thank you."

Her voice was old and dry and very clear.

"Mrs. Koehler. You asked the venue to hold my date."

"I did."

"It isn't my date anymore."

"Then I will ask you only this. Come and see me Monday, at the house, before you speak to my grandson again. I won't explain it over the phone."

"Why should I?"

"Because I paid for that ballroom," she said. "And because I have known for some time that my grandson is not an honest man."

That stopped me.

"I'll be there Monday," I said.

"Ten o'clock. Bring no one. Thank you."

She hung up before I could ask anything else.

I sat there for a minute holding the phone.

Then I opened the group chat.

It was called Friendsgiving Crew.

It had forty-one people in it, and every one of them had been at the party or heard about it by breakfast.

Preston was in it.

So was Kendall.

Overnight, the chat had filled with messages.

Some of them were from people I barely knew.

Kendall had written: Mar's just upset. We'll sort it out as a family, love you all.

Preston had written: Please give us privacy.

Under it a woman from his office had added a flower emoji.

Nobody had said a word to me.

I sat on the edge of my childhood bed and typed slowly.

I'm going to say this once. Last night I wrote a zero because my fiancé asked me to. He had arranged with Gwen, in October, for Kendall's card to go in last. He booked the Nashville suite in Kendall's name in July. The package is called Third Anniversary Weekend.
