Chapter 5: Fourth Floor

Macy's building stood on a quiet street near the lake, six floors of tan brick with a doorman's desk and nobody behind it.

I took the stairs to the fourth floor.

My hands were steady on the rail, which surprised me.

I stopped outside 4C and stood there for a full minute.

Then I knocked twice.

The door opened on the chain.

One blue eye looked out at me.

"Levi," Macy said.

She closed the door, slid the chain off, and opened it again.

I had expected her to be afraid.

She stood in the doorway in a cream cardigan and leggings, her hair in a loose braid, and she looked tired and small.

"I'm alone," she said. "You can come in. I'd rather you didn't stand out there where people can film you."

"I don't want to come in."

"Then you'll be filmed."

I came in.

The condo was neat and sunny, with white furniture and a bowl of lemons on the counter.

A framed photo of her and Lydia as teenagers hung beside the television.

I stayed on the mat by the door.

"Nobody is listening," I said. "No phones, no family, no guests. Tell me what happened on the eighteenth."

Macy sat down on the arm of her sofa.

She folded her hands over her stomach.

"I already told you."

"You told a hall full of people. Tell me."

Her eyes filled.

"We met at the Brecken because you'd had a terrible week," she said. "You said Lydia didn't listen to you anymore. We had a drink. And then we had another."
