Chapter 12: Table Six

My sister knocked on Burke's door at seven in the morning with a rolling suitcase and a bag of bagels.

I had called her at three, crying so hard she'd made me say the whole thing twice.

She lives in Louisville, and she had been in her car by four.

"Where is she?" Greta said to Burke, in the doorway, in running shoes and a wrinkled blazer. "Never mind. I see her."

She dropped the suitcase, crossed the room, and took me in a headlock that hurt.

"You idiot," she said into my hair. "You absolute idiot. You are not allowed to find dead bodies without me."

I laughed, and it turned into a sob, and she held on.

Greta is three years older than me, and she has opinions about everything I have ever done.

She thinks my haircut is a mistake, my car is a deathtrap, and my taste in men is a public health issue.

Over her shoulder she looked at Burke up and down.

"And you're the detective," she said.

"Burke Harrigan."

"You slept on the couch?"

"Yes."

"Good," Greta said. "Make coffee."

By eight we sat around the table with a bagel apiece, and Greta had taken over his legal pad and was drawing a timeline with the cap of a pen in her teeth.

"Walk me through Vince's story," she said.

"He says Macy hired him in March and paid cash," Burke said.

"Macy was in Tucson in March."

"I know."

"With me. At my wedding. With two hundred people." Greta slapped the pad. "I have a photographer, a videographer and four hundred phone photos with timestamps. She sat at table six and fell asleep in the cake."
