Chapter 7: Your Signature

I called Superior Trust at eight the next morning, and by ten they had emailed me the application.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

It was my loops, my slanted N, the little tail I put on the final L.

It was very good.

I printed it at the office and put it in my bag next to the bank's letter.

Then I told Bev I was taking a long lunch.

"Do you want me to come?" Bev asked.

"No. But if I'm not back by two, call his mother and tell her I've gone to church."

"That'll scare her more than the police."

Brady worked at a heating supply showroom on Grand Avenue.

A row of furnaces stood along one wall with tags on them.

A salesman I'd met at two Christmas parties was explaining a thermostat to an old man.

Brady sat at the back with his sleeves rolled up.

He had slept in his clothes.

When he saw me coming across the floor, he stood up so fast his chair rolled into the file cabinet.

"Maura. You shouldn't be here."

"You came to mine yesterday."

"My mother did."

"And you followed her."

I put the bank's letter on his desk and laid the printed signature on top of it.

"Superior Trust," I said. "Account ending 4417. A line of credit for thirty-eight thousand dollars. I didn't open it."

He didn't look at the paper.

He looked at the salesman, who had stopped talking.

"Can we go outside?"

"No."

"Maura."

"I'd like to know where the money went."

"Please keep your voice down."
